A month after calling herself “so gay” on Saturday Night Live, Kristen Stewart opened up to London’s Sunday Times about her sexuality and her high-profile relationship with her Twilight costar Robert Pattinson.
"Considering I had so many eyes on me, I suddenly realized [my private life] affects a greater number of people than just me.It was an opportunity to surrender a bit of what was mine, to make even one other person feel good about themselves."That shift to being more public—which really started when she was photographed holding hands with and kissing women—"wasn't this grand statement, 'I was so confused! ' I have not been struggling."Stewart just doesn't have anything to hide. But then I can't walk outside holding somebody's hand, as I'm followed everywhere," she says."When I was dating Rob, the public was the enemy—and that is no way to live.Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first film, said: 'In terms of what Kristen told me directly, it didn't happen on the first movie. She said: 'After I cast him, I told Rob, "Don't even think about having a romance with her. You will be arrested."'The couple repeatedly denied rumours of a romance and, until last Spring, Stewart was dating long-term boyfriend Michael Angarano.
Nothing crossed the line while on the first film.'I think it took a long time for Kristen to realise, "OK, I've got to give this a go and really try to be with this person."'Hardwicke admitted she noticed the chemistry between the pair during filming, but warned Pattinson off Stewart, because she was 17 at the time, which would make her underage in several U. Stewart and Pattinson were rumoured to have finally gotten together when they filmed the first Twilight sequel New Moon last summer.co-star—earning them the nickname "Robsten"—taught her a lesson in what happens when her personal and professional identities merged. "It's not that I want to hide who I am or hide anything I'm doing in my life. But at the same time, I want so badly to expose myself," the 26-year-old actress says."People wanted me and Rob to be together so badly that our relationship was made into a product. It's that I don't want to become a part of a story for entertainment value."Stewart understands that as an actress in high-profile films, audiences will be interested in her love life. "I want to be understood and I want to be seen, and I want to do that in the rawest, purest, most naked way I can."It wasn't until recently, in fact, that Stewart confirmed she was dating visual-effects producer Alicia Cargile. It was an opportunity to surrender a bit of what was mine, to make even one other person feel good about themselves."For Stewart, dating Pattinson yielded more attention than she ever wanted."If it didn't seem like a relevant topic, like something that needed help, I would have kept my life private forever. The actors, who have been dating since last year, were due to make their first public appearance as a couple at Sunday's Bafta Film Awards, but ended up arriving separately.
